Aimee Martel, DPT, PT
As a ballet dancer growing up, Aimee was always intrigued by the body and human movement, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in physical therapy. She feels it is a privilege to be readily available to dancers who otherwise might wait too long to seek medical attention, and comforting to them to be seen by someone who "speaks their language". Her physical therapy practice in the San Francisco Bay Area caters to recreational, pre-professional, and professional performing artists. When they were training locally, she was the PT for Team USA Artistic (formerly synchronized) Swimming. Working with artistic athletes from recreational through Olympian level has given her unique experience and perspective.
Injury risk reduction, and rehabilitation from injury through strengthening and technique refinement is an important part of her treatment approach. Aimee’s goal is always to return the dancer to the studio stronger and safer than they were before they were injured. She leads workshops throughout the year for dance students and teachers where they learn anatomy, risk reduction strategies for common dance related injuries, safe warm up, stretching, and technique strengthening exercises. While her passion lies in treating dancers, she does enjoy working with active, motivated people in general. She strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Aimee has completed extensive annual continuing education coursework since beginning her career in 2007, including a performing arts medicine certification through PAMA and ACSM. She is a long time member of IADMS, the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. To enhance her dance medicine specialty, she became a Certified Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) Instructor in 2017.
Aimee graduated from San Diego State University with a B.S in Kinesiology, and then from Samuel Merritt University earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2007. She opened her private dance specialized practice in 2012. She looks forward to working with you!
